It’s no secret that here at LES LOLOS, we’re about women first. Our mission is to support, empower, connect and celebrate all women in all her many incarnations. While there’s never been a better time to be a woman, there is still such a distance from where we are and where we deserve to be. This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.”
Our greatest hope is that our daughters become women in a world where Gender Equality is a given. That our sons become men who fully embrace and respect that right.
One of the most beautiful things about today’s hyper-connectivity is that it allows voices that were previously ignored to be heard, loud and clear. Twenty years ago, when I was starting my first job at Glamour, I couldn’t have imagined that one day, I’d be running my own digital magazine for women from Paris. Back then, I was a college grad who didn’t know the difference between good writing and bad puns. Back then, the internet was Netscape and dial-up modems—but it was still amazing and faster than looking up a microfiche at the library. (Yes, I’m seriously dating myself here.)
All this to say that incredible, inconceivable change can and does happen in our lifetimes. 2030 is only fourteen years away. My daughter will be 20 years old, the same age I was when I came to live in France for the first time. What will Paris look like then? What will the planet look like?
Let’s celebrate and appreciate women today (and everyday!) but even better, let’s educate—ourselves and our children—about how to make this world a wonderful place for everyone in it.
X,
Maggie
